University of the Arts London


University of the Arts London (formerly the London Institute) is a public research university based in London, UK specializing in art, design, fashion andmedia. It is a collegiate university comprising six constituent colleges: Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Chelsea College of Art and Design, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion, School of Art andWimbledon. The university is the largest European provider of education in art, design, fashion, communication and the performing arts.

History

The University has its origins in five previously independent art, design, fashion and mediacolleges, which were collected for administrative purposes to form the Institute of London in 1986. Drama Centre London and Byam Shaw School of Art merged with Central Saint Martins in 1999 and 2006 respectively. Wimbledon College of Art he joined in 2006. The schools were originally established in the mid 19th century until the 20th century.

Under the Education Reform Act of 1988, the Institute of London became a single legal entity, and the first court of governors was established the following year, in 1989. The appointed Rector first was Professor John McKenzie. The London Institute was incorporated as an institution of higher education in 1991 and later was awarded the academic degree granting powers in 1993 by the Privy Council. Will Wyatt was appointed President of the Government during the same year. Sir William Stubbs was appointed Rector second after retirement of McKenzie in 1996. A coat of arms was granted to the Institute of London in 1998. Stevenson was appointed Lord Chancellor for the first time in 2000.

In the retirement of Sir William Stubbs, Sir Michael Bichard was appointed Rector in 2001 and encouraged the London Institute to apply for the status of the University. The London Institute originally chose not to apply because their individual colleges were internationally recognized in their own right. In 2003, the Institute received Privy Council approval for university status and was renamed University of the Arts London in 2004.

Wimbledon School of Art joined the university as a school in sixth place in 2006, and was renamed Wimbledon College of Art Sir John Tusawas named as new president, replacing Will Wyatt, in 2007. Nigel Carrington, an international lawyer and former managing director of McLaren Group, was named president in 2008, replacing Sir Michael Bichard.
From 2008 to 2010, a program of long-range efficiency saw a number of staff redundant and nearby fields.
In 2011, the playwright and actor Kwame Kwei-Armah became Chancellor, capping a partnership with the University, which began in 2002, while studying for a master's degree in screenwriting London College of Communication.
Central Saint Martins moved to a purpose built complex located in Kings Cross, in June 2011.
In 2012, the university commissioned Pentagram to rebrand their identity has already been successfully implemented in the six universities.
