University of Abertay Dundee History




The University of Abertay Dundee was created in 1994 under government legislation granting the title of "University" for the Dundee Institute of Technology. This organization - focused on expanding educational access to the working classes of Dundee - was founded in 1888 as Dundee College of Technology. It was recognized as a "university industrial" by the Scottish Office in 1902 and gained independent degree of surrender of authority in the 1970s.

Profile and reputation

Abertay is located in the center of Dundee. The buildings on campus include the historic buildings Old Dundee College of Business, a library, designed scenes about schools specializing in crime, ethical hacking labs designed to investigate the hacking and misuse and state art of computer games in the laboratories of the Centre of Excellence.

Abertay has a close-knit community of students both local talent and international students. Approximately one fifth of Abertay students come from outside the United Kingdom. One of Abertay's main strengths is its size, sense of community and focus of "open space" for learning and teaching results in cross disciplinary research groups, spawning many interesting projects collaborative research , gathering for example psychology and animation, or urban water management and computer games technology.

Abertay was the first university in the world to offer a "computer games" degree in 1997. Today it remains a leader in the field with two major developments - the creation of the first UK Center for Excellence in Computer Games Education, and a program of business support.

The Center of Excellence is accredited by Skill set and has strong links with industrial partners throughout the broadcast, interactive and digital media broad sectors. These partners include BBC Scotland, BBC New Media, Visions BBC, BSkyB, Channel 4, Electronic Arts, Realtime Worlds, Codemasters, Blitz, Rare, Sony Entertainment Europe, Microsoft and Disney Interactive Media.

The University runs "Ethical Hacking" curricula, both undergraduate and graduate. Recently spending a lot of money upgrading their laboratories, Abertay is at the forefront of research and development in computer security countermeasures.

The results of the latest research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) showed that Abertay is the most valuable modern university in Scotland for research in environmental science, law and psychology.

Abertay also academic research in the fields of forensic science, environmental systems, mental health and counseling, psychology, food science, biotechnology and business management. The facilities include teaching forensic scenes of crime house and a bank. Abertay researchers recently made headlines worldwide when they published the results of their research in recovering fingerprints from fabrics using a technique known as vacuum metal deposition (VMD). It is the first time in over 30 years that fingerprints on fabrics have been a major focus for research, and the team has had a number of successes with this method.

The research team based at Abertay SIMBIOS work center with soils and ecosystems with leading academics from around the world who have joined the team in recent years. The team working across a number of areas including the use of soil science to understand climate change.

Abertay organizes and hosts the annual international Dare to be Digital competition design games involving teams of students from around the world compete to create a new game in the space of ten weeks. Working with industry mentors, teams experience the same learning environment that you work with a major company - as do students in courses of Abertay. Winning teams are the only candidates for a unique BAFTA - The "Ones to Watch 'Award.

School of Computing and Engineering Systems

Famous Abertay offered the first 'ethical hackers' degrees, and is one of the leading centers in the country hacking. Other courses include computing and networking, web design and development, and systems engineering.

Ethical Hacking courses, offered at the undergraduate and graduate teaching students to hack computer systems. The knowledge base allows students to develop countermeasures for complex security problems, and as a result produce very powerful computer systems security. The approach to security is common to the other courses offered. These include degrees in systems engineering, who teaches sophisticated computer control manufacturing processes and in computer security using technology to understand and prevent major international crimes.

Ethical hacking Abertay Society (EHSociety), is the student society Hacking first execution in the country. Currently meets weekly on campus, it aims to educate and enlighten members on the security of the offensive team, their techniques and their impacts. The society is currently EHSociety more active and visible on campus. In addition, its members represent the University at conferences throughout Europe as Brucon hacking. Segu-TAY was held on October 15, 2011, and was the first conference of the annual Hacking societies. The combination of cutting edge information security research Hacking ethical qualifications, and an active society Abertay put at the forefront of the hacker culture and education.

Institute of Arts, Media and Computer Games

The Institute of Arts, Media and Computer Games has links with businesses to inform the content of their courses, ranging from the game programming in science and technology to narrative based animation arts end.

All courses are accredited skills with the Institute of award Skill set Media Academy status. Institute teaching spaces are like studio environments used by modern creative companies - game developers working with the animators and visual artists, sound and technologists create content for computer games and other interactive multimedia products.

School of Contemporary Sciences

The courses offered by the School of Contemporary Sciences including biomedical sciences, biotechnology, civil engineering, environmental studies, food science, police and security, and forensic science.

Inside the school are chemical analysis laboratories, construction and testing of engineering solutions, training and forensic science graduates using simulated crimes. College Rankin House - a fully furnished to recreate crime scenes. It was named after and opened by internationally renowned crime writer Ian Rankin

The SIMBIOS, Abertay Centre for the Environment, Urban Water Technology Center and Food Innovation @ Abertay centers are located in the School of Contemporary Sciences.

Dundee Business School

Dundee Business School has links with young and mature industries such as new media and energy and oil, and staff from a range of academic backgrounds, and industry professionals.

Available courses include a series of pathways MBA - including biotechnology, energy development, finance and sports - as well as programs in accounting, law and marketing.

Faculty of Social Sciences and Health

The course offerings include psychology, nursing, counseling, sport and exercise, and sociology.

The courses offered by the Division of Psychology are accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). This means that students who complete a course of study and meet the requirements of the BPS, are eligible for admission to postgraduate training for professional practice.

The division of nursing and counseling has a skilled nursing bay on campus to actual clinical practice, as well as a suite of counseling students to practice their therapeutic techniques. Video recording equipment allows review of the training sessions, to encourage personal and professional development of student counselors.
