University of Aberdeen - The modern university

The ratio of the two former university campus has changed over the years. While at the time of unification each had about the same number of students, Marischal College buildings began to expand in the late-19 with a significant rebuilding effort ended in 1906. In the 20th century, the university has expanded greatly, particularly in King's College. The new buildings were built on the land around King's College in the entire 20th century. Initially, these were built to match the old buildings (for example, the New classrooms and Kings Hall Elphinstone), but later in the 1960s were built in brutalist style. Meanwhile, Foresterhill campus began training medical students in the 1930s alongside Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

In the departments of the mid 20th century that had been in Marischal College moved to one of these new buildings (mostly at Kings College) and in the afternoon of the 20th century Marischal College had been abandoned by all but the Department of Anatomy a graduation hall and Marischal Museum (Marischal College has been restored as the headquarters of Aberdeen City Council). After extensive fundraising, a £ 57 million new university library (the Sir Duncan Rice Library) opened in fall 2011 on the campus of Kings College Library to replace the Queen Mother passed and was officially opened by the Queen in September 2012. Today, most students spend most of the time in modern buildings that provide up-to-date facilities for the activities of teaching, research and other, such as a dining room. However, the old buildings at Kings College are still in daily use such as conference rooms and a tutorial and accommodation for various academic departments.

Symbols of the University and Corporate Identity

Coat of arms of the university is an integral part of the current logo, which together with burgundy and black colors, is widely used in the campus signage, print and online.

Coat of Arms

Coat of arms of the university incorporates the founder and the location of the two universities is derived. In the upper left are the arms of the town of Old Aberdeen, with the addition of a symbol of knowledge that is passed from above. Top right is George Keith, the fifth Earl Marischal. Bottom left are those of Bishop William Elphinstone. The bottom right quarter is a simplified version of the three castles that represent the city of Aberdeen (the symbol of the city also features prominently in the arms of Robert Gordon University).

The motto of the University of Aberdeen is Initium Sapientiae Timor Domini, which translates from Latin as "The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord." It's a quote from the Old Testament of the Bible, Psalm 111, verse 10. It also appears in the Book of Proverbs (9:10). The slogan can be seen on the bow by the new kings of the main street in the Kings College campus and elsewhere in the campus and in formal as graduation certificates.
