Aberystwyth University




Aberystwyth University (Wales: Prifysgol Aberystwyth) is a university located inAberystwyth, Wales. Aberystwyth is a founding Member Institution of the former federal University of Wales. In 2006 the university had more than 12,000 students from seventeen academic departments.

Founded in 1872 as the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth became a founding member of the University of Wales in 1894 and changed its name to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. In the mid 1990s, the university changed its name again to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. On September 1, 2007, at the University of Wales ceased to be a federal university and Aberystwyth became independent again. However, students enrolled from academic year 2009/2010, or whose first year of study was in the academic year 2008/2009, may elect to receive his degree from the University of Wales Aberystwyth University.

The National Student Survey named Aberystwyth fifth in the UK in 2006 and tenth in 2007 for student satisfaction in general. In The Times Good University Guide 2008, which he shared with five other universities in the UK the highest score for "student satisfaction", and 39th out of 113 overall. The Guardian University Guide 2013 ranks Aberystwyth equal 81st out of 120 universities in the UK, and The Complete Guide to University ranks 58th out of 116.

History

The University was founded in 1872 as the University College of Wales. The first director wasThomas Charles Edwards and initially had 26 students. Before 1894, when the university joined the University of Wales, as a founding member, students underwent tests at the University of London).

University Coat of Arms was granted in 1880. The display features two red dragons; the red dragon is a common symbol of Wales, and an open book, symbolizing learning. The shield is an eagle or phoenix above a flaming tower, but possibly symbolizes the rebirth of the university after the fire of 1885. The motto is "Nid Byd, Byd Heb Wybodaeth": "A world without knowledge is not a world at all."

The Department of International Politics was founded in 1919 and Aberystwyth said to be the oldest of its kind in the world.

The Department of Sports and Exercise Sciences was established in 2000, honors psychology degree sets were introduced in September 2007, and individual psychology honors in 2009.

The university appointed a new rector in 2011 which has now begun a complete restructuring of academic departments in large institute’s thematic subject.

Reputation and academic rankings

The Guardian University Guide 2013 ranked Aberystwyth equal 81st of 120 UK universities, compared to 50 in 2012 and 49 to exit 118 for 2011.

Aberystwyth was given 6th place ranking Supplement Times Higher Education 2008 student experience, a satisfaction survey of college students in levels ranging from education to social life.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), the IT department was ranked 17th in the UK for the first time in Wales, with a research profile of 100% quality. Guardian University Guide 2013 classifies the output of department 68, 103 in the United Kingdom.

As of June 2012 Aberystwyth is one of 190 schools worldwide with MBA accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), which is described as "a member of the Association of MBA students and graduates, accredited business schools MBA employers ". MBA College was accredited by AMBA also in 2007.

Aberystwyth says its Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences was the first university to offer degrees British individual department in human geography and physical geography. It is ranked 11 of 60 UK universities for Geography and Environmental Studies in 2009 by The Guardian University Guide and Quick 2009 Times Good University ranked it 12 out of 76 departments of geography and related environmental science.

In 2007, the university was criticized for its record on sustainability, ranking 97th of 106 higher education institutions in the UK in that year "Green League" table. It ranked 76th in 2009. In 2012, the university was included in "Error, not awarded" section table, ranking 132nd of 145 equal

Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural

The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural (IBERS) is a research and teaching center at the University of Aberystwyth for the study of the biological, environmental and rural.

IBERS together staff from the Institutes of Rural Sciences and Biological Sciences at Aberystwyth University and the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER). About 300 members of the research staff, teaching and research support out basic, strategic and applied biology at the level of genes and other molecules with the impact of climate change and bio-energy for sustainable agriculture and land use. They also offer training. There is a formal collaboration with the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Bangor.

Says IBERS Aberystwyth has a long history of significant investments in facilities and its location allows easy access to natural habitats and managed landscapes. The library (including nearby National Library of Wales) and the IT network are available to the University as a whole, and there is a new building.
