Central Saint Martins

Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (often abbreviated as Central Saint Martins or CSM) is a constituent college of the University of the Arts London. The school has a strong international reputation and is considered one of the world's leading art and design institutions. Courses are offered in the foundation, undergraduate and graduate.

Profile

Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design is widely regarded as one of the leading art and design institutions in the world. CSM was formed in 1989 from the merger of the Central School of Art and Design, founded in 1896, and Saint Martins School of Art, founded in 1854. Central Saint Martins became a constituent college of the London Institute in 1986, a federal agency formed by the Inner London Education London art Authority to gathering, design, and fashion and media in schools a collegiate structure end administrative. The London Institute was granted University status and was renamed University of the Arts London in 2004. These short courses can act as a "taster" courses and portfolio construction to assist in the implementation of a future art student in college or for creative professionals to "improve skills" and continue their creative and professional development. For 2012, the Central Saint Martins has extended its integrated Study Abroad program to include a new electives for study abroad students. Central Saint Martins was the first university to start courses double summer session of the city in 2008, starting in London and then go to any of Milan, Barcelona or Paris with another renowned art and design schools.

Central Saint Martins establishes links between artistic practices, leading to research projects and employs graduates in national and international design consultancy through its Center for Innovation and Design Lab. Central Saint Martins has become one of the largest providers of art and design education in the world and has been registered museum for its historical and contemporary collections.

History

Central School of Art and Design

Central School of Art and Design, formerly the Central School of Arts and Crafts, was established by the London County Council in 1896 to provide specialized instruction for art workers cottage industries. The school was designed to be a center at which art scholars and students could be under the influence of established artists and employers. The goal was a direct result of the Arts and Crafts movement William Morris sponsored and John Ruskin. The Royal College of Art Women, founded in 1842, was transferred to the London County Council and joined the Central School of Art and Design in 1908. The architect, educator andconservationist William Lethaby was a key figure in the founding of the school and was appointed joint manager George Frampton from 1896 to 1911. Under Letha by the Central School of Art and Design was innovative in both its educational objectives and teaching methods. Most teachers are successful professionals in their craft, and provided the school with a variety of practical skills and valuable contacts with the creative industries.

Saint Martins School of Art

Saint Martins School of Art was founded in 1854 and was founded by the authorities of St Martin-in-the-Fields. The pastor, Reverend M McKenzie, and others were concerned that industrial education should be developed and allied to general education already provided by Church schools. Art education intended to form part of this industrial instruction for apprentices. The school became independent of the parish in 1859. The school was recognized by the Technical Education Board of the London County Council in 1894 and became part of the development of technical education will take place in London and Britain. The school was firmly established as a leading fine art and commercial art schools, producing many famous artists of the time.

The Gilbert-Garret Competition for Sketching Clubs was started in 1870 in Saint Martins School of Art, during the tenure of Mr. John Parker as director, and was named after its first president, Sir John Gilbert.

The sculpture department of St. Martin's School of Art was created by Frank Martin in the mid-fifties. Anthony Caro was one of the first instructors there and had a great influence, especially with students in his informal evening classes. In his teaching, Caro sought to embrace the changes that had occurred in sculpture over the last 100 years of European art. Among Caro students were Tim Scott (enrolled in 1956), Phillip King and Isaac Witkin (1957), David Annesley and Michael Bolus in (1958). Bill Tucker (1959). At that time, Phillip King had returned as a teacher, as everyone else is going to do in the next decade.

Drama Center London

Main article: Drama Center in London

The Drama Center in London was founded in 1963 by a breakaway group of teachers and students at the Central School of Speech and Drama, led by John Blatchley, Yat Malmgren and Christopher Fettes. The school is a member of the Conference of Drama Schools and acting undergraduate course is accredited by the National Council for Drama Training. The Drama Center London merged with Central Saint Martins in 1999.

Byam Shaw School of Art

The Byam Shaw School of Art was founded by artists John Byam Shaw and Rex Vicat Cole in 1910 as a school of drawing and painting (originally located in Kensington, until he moved to the arcade in the 1990s). It was included by the Central Saint Martins in 2003.

Schools are based in London with sites located in Kings Cross, Clerkenwell and Archway.

Kings Cross

Central Saint Martins moved to a building near Granary Square complex in Kings Cross in 2011. The movement created a college site unifying all the schools in one place, except for the campus of the arch where the first year BA Fine Art and MA Fine Arts are based, and the campus where students Farringdon based foundation.

Gallery

Central Saint Martins houses the Letha by Gallery in Kings Cross, which showcases historical and contemporary collections. Founded in 1896, the gallery displays a variety of objects such as books, prints and original artwork and design. The school has an active policy of collecting contemporary work by its staff, students and alumni. The College also researches, produces publications and curates exhibitions based on the collections it contains.

Platform Theatre

The Platform Theatre is part of the Central Saint Martins complex in Kings Cross - has 360 in a variety of configurations and Fuly equipped to a high professional level, including a complete flight tower and orchestra pit. The theater is a work platform for students to receive and produce theater, professional hosting companies, as well as Drama Centre in London and other parts of the University of the Arts. The theater aims to present all aspects of the performing arts in a very flexible.
